Who sees what
Other callers see nothing but what you say in your greeting and on a live call; your number is never displayed. The provider sees the number you call from, your greeting, your messages and any purchase details, and uses them to run the service under its privacy policy. Your carrier sees a call to the dialled number, as it does for every call you make. Nobody else is involved.
What appears on a phone bill
An itemised bill or online call log will show the date, time, dialled number and duration. Toll-free calls are listed as toll-free; local-format numbers appear as a domestic call to that area code. Neither is labelled as a chat line. On a shared family or business plan, the account holder may be able to see this log. If that is a concern, a prepaid mobile or a secondary-number app used consistently for the line is the simplest answer.
What appears on a card statement
If you buy minutes, the charge appears under the provider's billing name, which is usually a corporate name rather than the line's brand. It is discreet but not invisible. Use a payment method whose statements only you see, or a prepaid card, if this matters.
Keeping your greeting anonymous
The greeting is the one place callers regularly give away more than they intend:
- Use a first name or a handle, never a surname.
- Give a city or neighbourhood, not a street, building or workplace.
- Avoid distinctive details that identify you locally — an unusual job title, a named venue you run.
- Remember your voice itself is identifying to anyone who knows you; on a small-town line, that is worth a thought.
- Delete your greeting before you hang up if you do not want it heard while you are away.
Extra discretion for gay and bi callers
Gay lines are men-only, have no profiles, photos or location pins, and leave nothing on a home screen — which is why many men who are not out, or who travel for work, prefer them. The remaining exposure is the phone bill and card statement described above. A dedicated prepaid number and a private payment method close both. Data retention and your rights
Providers store greetings and messages for the service to work and keep purchase records for accounting. How long, and what you can ask to have deleted, is set out in each provider's privacy policy. If deleting your data matters to you, contact the provider's customer service directly; we are an editorial directory and do not hold caller data for any line.
Frequently asked questions
Can my partner or family see that I called a chat line?
Only if they can see your itemised phone bill or call log and look up the number. The call is not labelled. A separate prepaid number avoids this.
Does the charge on my card say 'chat line'?
No. It appears under the provider's corporate billing name. It is discreet but can be looked up.
Is a chat line more private than a dating app?

Can I ask a provider to delete my greeting and data?
You can delete your greeting yourself on any call. For stored data, contact the provider's customer service under its privacy policy.
