Step 1: Dial and hear the welcome
You call the line's number from any phone. A short welcome recording confirms you are on the right line, states that callers must be 18 or older, and on most lines tells a new caller about the free trial. First-time callers are recognised by the phone number they dial from; returning members are asked for their membership ID and PIN. Nothing is charged at this stage.
Step 2: Record your greeting
The system asks you to record a greeting — a short voice introduction that other callers will hear when they browse. Most lines also ask you to choose a category (for example men seeking women) and to state or key in your location so you can be sorted into a local room. You can listen back and re-record as many times as you like, and you can change the greeting on any later call.
This is the only thing other callers know about you, so it is worth thirty seconds of thought. Our greeting guide covers what works; the short version is first name, area, one specific interest and what you are looking for, in about twenty seconds.
Step 3: Browse the live room
Once your greeting is saved you enter the live room. The system plays other callers' greetings one after another, sorted so that people near you come first. Using the keypad you can skip to the next greeting, replay one, leave a private voice message for that caller, or request a live connection. Callers who are currently on the line are usually flagged so you know who can talk right now.
You will also receive messages from callers who heard your greeting. The line notifies you with a tone or a prompt and you can listen, reply or ignore them without ever leaving the browse loop.
Step 4: Connect live, privately
When you and another caller both accept, the system bridges the two calls. You are now in a private, one-on-one conversation. Neither of you sees the other's phone number — the connection runs through the line's platform — and either of you can end it with a keypress and return to browsing. That anonymity is the core of the whole format: you decide what to share, and the system shares nothing.
What is free and what costs money
New callers receive a free trial — a fixed number of minutes, commonly 30 and on a few lines 60, as published by each provider. The clock runs while you are on the line, including recording and browsing. On most mainstream singles lines women chat free with no limit. When trial minutes are used, callers can buy a prepaid package of minutes; on the general lines in our directory those run from $5.49 for 10 minutes to $54.99 for 225 minutes, and gay lines use a separate table. Frequently asked questions
Do I need to create an account?
No. The system recognises you by the phone number you call from. A membership ID and PIN are issued only if you buy a package, so that your minutes can follow you to other phones.
Can other callers hear my greeting after I hang up?
On most lines your greeting stays in the room for a period after you leave so callers can leave you messages, which you hear on your next call. You can delete or re-record it at any time.
Is a chat line the same as a party line?
Not quite. A party line puts many callers in one group conversation. Modern chat lines are built around private one-on-one connections, though some lines also offer a group room as an option.
Are calls recorded?
Your greeting and any voice messages you leave are stored by the provider so other callers can hear them. Live one-on-one connections are not something providers advertise recording; check the specific provider's terms if this matters to you.
