What the line hides for you
Every live connection on a chat line is bridged through the provider's platform, so the other caller never sees your phone number. There is no profile, no photo and no username unless you choose to give one in your greeting. Voice messages are relayed the same way. In practical terms, the only information another caller has about you is what you say.
What the line cannot hide
The provider itself sees your number — that is how trials and memberships are tracked. Your carrier logs the call like any other, and it may appear on an itemised bill or in an online call log. Local-format numbers show up as an ordinary out-of-area call; toll-free numbers show up as a toll-free call. Neither is labelled as a chat line, but a curious person could look the number up.
Does blocking caller ID (*67) work?
Blocking your caller ID hides your number from the party you are calling — but the party you are calling is the chat line, which needs your number to recognise you and credit your trial. Many lines will not connect a blocked call at all, or will ask you to enter a membership ID and PIN. Since other callers cannot see your number anyway, *67 solves a problem you do not have and can create one you do.
Practical options for a private call
If bill visibility is your concern, these are the realistic tools:
- Use a prepaid mobile or a secondary number app, and use the same one consistently so your trial and membership stay attached to it.
- Prefer a toll-free number where the line offers one, so no per-call charge or unusual area code appears on a metered plan.
- Buy packages with a payment method whose statements you control.
- Keep your greeting to a first name and a general area. Anonymity you give away in a greeting cannot be taken back.
- Delete your greeting before you hang up if you do not want to receive messages between calls.
Anonymity and honesty are not in tension
Being anonymous does not mean being fake. The callers who get the most out of a line are honest about who they are and what they want while withholding the identifying details — name, employer, street, number — until trust is earned. That is the same balance you would strike on a first date, and the line makes it easier by handling the number for you.
