Signal one: the number you call from
When your call arrives, the platform reads the caller ID and maps its area code to a region. A 312 or 773 number is treated as Chicago, a 713 as Houston, and so on. This is instant and needs nothing from you, which is why the first greetings you hear on a first call are usually already local.
Signal two: what you tell the line
Most lines ask you to state your city in your greeting, and many also prompt you to key in a ZIP code or area code. This explicit signal takes priority over the caller-ID guess. It exists precisely because the guess is often wrong — people keep mobile numbers when they move.
When the guess is wrong
Three common cases break the area-code guess:
- You moved and kept your number. Give your real location when prompted; the line will sort you correctly.
- You use a VoIP or secondary-number app whose area code was assigned arbitrarily. Same fix — state or key in your location.
- You call through a business or shared system that presents a central number. Use a personal phone where you can; otherwise rely on the location prompt.
Steering the room deliberately
Local sorting is a default, not a restriction. If you travel, are moving soon or simply want to hear callers from another city, use the line's keypad option to change region — most lines let you browse a neighbouring area, a specific metro or all callers nationally. Some callers keep their greeting local and browse wider; others set their greeting to the city they are visiting for the week. Both work.
Why the dialled number's area code does not matter
Callers sometimes assume a line whose number begins 213 is a Los Angeles room. It is not. The dialled number is just the entrance to a national platform; routing is based on your number and your stated location, never on the number you called. Toll-free and local-format numbers for the same line lead to the same room.

Only until you give your location. State your city in your greeting or key in your ZIP when prompted and the line sorts you correctly.
Can I browse callers in a city I am visiting?
Yes. Use the line's change-region option, or record a greeting that states the city you are in.
Does calling a 310 number connect me to Los Angeles callers?
No. The dialled number is a national entrance. Your local room is based on your own area code and stated location.
Do all lines have a ZIP code prompt?
Not all. Every line uses caller ID and your greeting; some add a ZIP or area-code prompt for precision. The recording will tell you.
